I am not sure where we are headed,
but I can see you there with me…

Sitting to my right in your window seat,
my one arm held tightly inside your two
I feel the exhilaration of our unknown journey,
gliding together, over nothing but blue

I see you there, lying beside me,
on a rainbow of satin sheets…

Reaching to my left, I touch your skin,
as your cheek rests peacefully on my chest
I feel the ease of your sleeping breath,
in the soft sigh of our much-needed rest

I see you and I, talking and walking,
past streets with familiar names…

Glancing down, I find your hand in mine,
as we walk along a boulevard of light
I feel the exhilaration of our shared experience,
strolling together, through an unforgetable night

I make my way around the crowded table
until I see your beautiful smile…

Looking across, we are paused together,
our eyes connecting as our thoughts entwine
I feel the ease of this perfect moment,
as your glass of white meets the red in mine

I wake up to the buzz of my cell alarm,
and the realization that I won’t see you here…

Staring straight up, at my still dark ceiling,
my mind drifts back to inside my dreams
I feel the exhilaration, and the ease in knowing,
that all I’ve just seen, is as close as it seems

 Triathlon
I am not completely sure
if I am entitled to be,
or, really, if I’m even allowed
But, I am thoroughly impressed by you
And, dare I say,
I am extremely proud…

I watched you, in your controlled haste,
steadying, readying, and taking your place at the start
And then I noticed the cool and calm ease
with which you settled into the race
Then, somehow, you found the presence of mind
to look up, to find me, and even to wave
Before swimming, strong and steadily away,
from the huge smile you left on my face

20180819_091535

It seems that I’d completely underestimated
the strength and power of your stroke

as I arrived, too late to support you,
through your swim to bike transition
My own personal pride thoroughly jolted
by the sick emptiness in my stomach

My eagerness to video, thwarted,
by your speed, and your top five position

Yet, my whole heart went out there with you
as you spun your way through the winding course
I went up the hills with you, and then down,
my mind, racing along, despite what I couldn’t see
It was impossible for me to relax, or even to sit,
with all of the unknown, and all the anticipation
So I paced, anxiously, awaiting your arrival
as you pedaled your way back to me

20180819_094238

A contented relief flushed over me
as you braked, and then you touched ground
As you pushed your bicycle to your chosen spot,
I felt as much like your fan, as I was your friend
Despite my pent up angst, and energetic love,
I knew I had a very small window to speak
Time enough to cheer you, and to reassure you,
and to tell you, that I’d find you near the end

As you switched your shoes, and turned to go
I noticed the game-face return to your glance
I’ve seen that will and determination before
It’s who you are, and in much that you do
As you ran out of sight, on your last leg,
I yelled more encouragement, in due haste
Wishing that my words could push you along
Hoping my spirit would run with you

As you emerged from the tunnel, weary legged,
nearing the last of your well of endurance,
your eyes seemed focused, intently on the task
Looking for anything that you had left inside
While you bravely ascended the final climb,
you amazingly found one final burst,
crossing the finish, alone with your fatigue
Soon to be joined by my burgeoning pride

20180902_102600

I stayed back, for a minute or two, purposely,
to simply observe, and to give you some space
And as I watched you, catching up to your breath,
I saw right then, what separates you from the crowd
It’s your personal investment, in all that you attempt
In my eyes, you’re resplendent, with all that you are
And in that moment, as you looked especially beautiful,
I could not have been more impressed or proud

Meeting

                                  Meeting

I arrive with wine, and little apprehension

Entering your home, my worries are very few
Confident that you are kind, that you are genuine
because your wonderful daughter is a part of you

As I look around, a comfort settles over me
Instantly, I am at ease, and even more sure
We say our hellos and she squeezes my hand

Moments later she takes me on a tour

I see warm colours, and family photos
lovingly displayed, up and down the hall
Your own creations, and your creativity,
gracing each room, and on every wall

Crafty signs, stitch work, and oil paintings
Your personal touches, so easily found
Children and teens, newlyweds and grandkids,
all of your loved ones, leaning or hanging around

Tangibly vibrant, with a flick of each switch
The now and the then, brought to light
The young couple, handsome and pretty
Their beginning, framed, in black and white

We stroll through your memories, new and old,
The long journey of a husband and a wife
A visual journal, of his story and yours,
Room to room, so full of a life

As we join everyone in your living room
I look to you, straight across, sitting in a chair
Our glances meet, knowingly, for a moment
neither overly concerned, but both of us aware

Just as I had hoped, with this important step,
I was adding perspective to my happy reality
But it was also tweaking my ongoing interest
with peoples’ grasps on their own mortality

I find myself staring, as we are having dinner

catching myself, just before you do
I am lost, inside my natural curiosity,
wondering about your point of view

I imagine what you might be thinking
Another Easter dinner, like any other year?
Are you blissfully oblivious to who is new,
and simply thankful that everyone is here?

Are you thinking about who is missing,
a little sad, and reminiscent as you look around?
Or are you soaking in the whole atmosphere
Every familiar sight, every happy sound?

Your grandchildren, all talking excitedly
That perfect mix of exuberance and loud
The smiles of three uniquely beautiful daughters
Your constant smile, telling me you are proud

Your living legacy, right here before you
Those most important, just being themselves
A vital portrait of your loving family
brought down from off the shelves

Your smile subsides only when you speak
Voice cracking, behind the few words you say
You seem quietly content, at the head of the table
as I gradually get to know you, on this April day

Everyone slowly heads towards the door,
saying thank-you and exchanging good-byes
I see your expression change, ever so slightly,
a
s a twinge of melancholy forms in your eyes

Kris

Sometimes we let life get in the way of the simple but important things…like friendships. I made a promise to myself to never feel the sting of such regret again.
It hurts too much.

                         Kris
Woke up to a beautiful morning    20180308_083200
with nothing but sky and blue
The sun graciously greeted me
and I immediately thought of you

I thought about these past two years
mortality, and time, weighing on my mind
I thought about losing touch with friends
and wishing that I could rewind

To a deck chair on a porch

and a cold pint in my hand
To a conversation we once had
while listening to my favourite band

“I appreciate their talent”, you said,
as you tried to give it a chance.
But when it came right down to it,
“it just doesn’t make me dance.”

“What’s the point of music, you asked,
unless it brings you to your feet?
It has to have danceable lyrics.
And where’s the danceable beat?!”

And to emphasize your point
you attempted to dance along
But “the guitar was too heavy,
and the rhythm was all wrong.”

This didn’t slow you down though
and you improvised some moves
Then you dropped your pint onto the deck
and it spilled between the grooves

The whole situation seemed hilarious
and we laughed until we were both flush
I blamed it on your dancing
while you blamed it on RUSH

This became an ongoing theme
whenever we got together
Lousy food was because of RUSH
and so was lousy weather

Which brings me back to this morning

to the sun and a sky so blue
Time and mortality on my mind
and to fond memories of you

You always had a unique perspective
a contagious smile and a playful grin
But you also had so much more
and it all came from within

A huge heart for everyone
and an ease to your ways
I just wish we’d kept in touch
and could share more sunny days

Miss ya big guy…you were one of a kind.

Limitation

The unique thing
about regret
is that
the less you experience
the more you get        – G.G.

Limitation

I’m taking a bit of a risk,
but what if I didn’t…

I’d rather live in the moment
than live with regret
Take a chance on what I want
and grab all I can get
No stop signs
No hesitation
No blurred lines
No limitation
I intend to make the most
of this one-time life
Bring the best of it all
into plain sight
Exhausting each day
Exhausted each night

My motivation can be seen
in unique places
In hopeful eyes
On mourning faces
Times of celebration
Times of dread
Times to remember
Time, to look ahead

IMG_20141215_173356[1]

I’d rather look to the future
than look back with regret
Embrace all of those who inspire
and give back as I get
No retreat
No reservation
No boundaries
No limitation
I intend to stretch my mind
to greater lengths
Flights of fancy
and fanciful flights
Lifting the best of me
to loftier heights

My motivation can be found
in unique places
In beautiful smiles
On candle lit faces
People we meet
People we admire
People we love
People who inspire

I’d rather embrace the possibilities
than accept the regret
Put myself completely out there
Give more than I get
No misunderstanding
No misinterpretation
No incompletes
No limitation
I intend to hold nothing back
in my quest to grow

Express my self
to all who should know
Take the best of me along
to wherever I go

Live this life for every moment
Experience more, every chance I get
Taking risks, and taking strides
Staying ahead of my regret

Unexpected

Unexpected
The ho hum of small details

A vague list in my head
Christmas lights turned on
A lingering hunger fed
Winding down in my mind
The couch, and then the bed
A text, a yes, and a smile
And it’s you and me instead

No more bitter cold
Skies no longer gray
The perfect way to end
A far from perfect day
Happier in an instant
What else could I say?
A text, a yes, and a smile
And you were on your way

The best of the unexpected
I couldn’t ask for more
An entirely better night
Than twenty minutes before
I see the lights of your car
I glide across the floor
A text, a yes, a smile
And you were at my door

Looking beautiful, as always
As you step into the light
I feel the urge to tell you
As the moment feels right
My arms, my heart, reach for you
And we pull you in tight
A text, a yes, and a smile
And the rest of the night

Smile

               Smile

I only get to see you            Sun for Every
once in a while
But, every time I do,
I get to see your smile

My favourite thing, so far,
has been that smile
The way it pulls me in,
and how it makes me feel
From the time we met,
to right now, and now,
it is seeing you smile
that makes us feel real

Your smile resonates personality,
and a true love for life
A glow that surrounds you
and reflects in your eyes
Its spontaneous nature
belies an instinct to hide
And the more that it reveals,
the less that it tries

Your smile radiates positivity,
in the purest sense
In its genuine warmth,
in the honesty that it shows
When a tear drop appears,
behind a memory,
your smile takes over
like a friend who knows

Most of all, I’ve noticed,
your smile is simply beautiful
It expresses a depth
to the life inside your heart
A confidence of character,
that I find to be contagious
Something to keep with me,
on the days we are apart

I only get to see you
once in a while
But the next time I do,
I know I’ll see you smile

Guiding

                             Guiding10259702_886031944756408_4006322937612843549_n

I have never been a religious person
What I do believe in is the spirit of love
I believe that there are guiding spirits
who are shining down from above

I know that my mother is one of mine
That she has guided me along my way
That she helped me to raise my girls
That she is smiling on this day

You must be proud of your granddaughters, Mom
The one you held, and the one you never knew
They are beautiful and funny and they are genuine
They are both a lot like you

They approach life with respect and emotion
With the same honest heart that you had
With the same love and embrace for family
The same priorities that you taught their Dad

There is much of the best of you to find in them
Every year, more and more that I can see
And because of who they already are
I know that you are proud of me

Happy Mother’s Day
…and thank-you.

SAME

SAME

Eyes wide openIMG_20150330_112911[1]
Looking over at me
Awake in the wake.
        More beautiful
        More expressive
        More than I can take.

That same dream
The same image
         just as clear.

The same realities
The same memories
         find me here.

Still you are gone
Never coming back

Sadly taken away.
        Hard to accept
        Hard to understand
        Hard to even say

The same nightmare
That same visionbed - Copy
        of the very end.
The same horror
The same memories
         to comprehend.

Shock and disbelief
Second-hand news
First-hand pain.
        Taking my time
        Taking my sleep
        Taking me back again.

The same heartache
The same dream
         of once was.
The same nightmare
The same memories
        The same just because.

Chances

CHANCES

IMG_0145

I found in her that second chance…
Opened up my heart to real romance
A long clouded image had come into view
A great next life with someone new
I knew very quickly and without a doubt
So beautiful, inside and out
Dared to imagine what might be
I put it all out there for her to see
Love and happiness united again
Lost sight of never and discovered when
A future together for us both to explore…
A second chance for so much more.

He speaks about his second chance…

A gift of patience, and of circumstance
Dispiriting years of just getting by
Of wondering if and wondering why
Creative talents suppressed by his debt
Burdened by unfeasible and not just yet
Consigned to a life so near to his dreams
But possible is not always as far as it seems
The right person noticed what we all knew
Finally doing what he was meant to do
I smile when I hear about his smile…
A second chance well worth his while.

Second chances that make us pause…

Just too close, and just because
The end as near as a slippery ledge
Precariously tumbling over the edge
Confined alone in a submerged car
A near fatal miss that reached so far
Timing and fortune saved her then
Bringing her back to start again
A young life, an unexpected turn
Another opportunity to grow and learn
Miraculous escape from the ultimate cost…
A second chance when hope seemed lost

A second chance to become friends…

Made the effort by making amends
Lost years gone, without a word
Good times erased by what was heard
  A misunderstanding that got intense
Something small that became immense
You knew what to do and what to say
One conversation packed it all away
Stubborn pride, no need to plead or beg
Simply putting the chicken before the egg
Breathing life back into something good…
A second chance because you should

See tomorrow as your second chance…

To make a change, to take a stance
Strong steps toward your goal
To be resolute in mind and soul
To know and grow, and strive and see
Dare to imagine what could be
Seek out life from barren soil
Extract enrichment from its daily toil
Take what’s worn and make it new
Seize the courage to be true to you
Bound forward and learn from the past…
Your next chance could be your last
