Yet

Gary's screen shot
Yet

We float our true feelings
around and around and around
We can easily grab onto many,
while some are not easily found
Some seem impossible to conceal,
while others are still tightly bound
Still wrapped up in the past,
they are waiting to be unwound
Yet…
It’s these unwound words, even inadvertently pointed,
that feel as sharp as they sound

A comment sneaks in and stings you
There, like a wasp without a buzz
A statement that’s not meant to harm,
yet, quite often, it still does
Jabs of memory, cuts of comparison
The flings and arrows of a once was
It takes so very little to belittle
in the context of just because

Inattentive and thoughtless behavior
when your partner’s life is its most unstable
Checking your phone or checking the scores
Refusing to apologize, when willing and able
The impact of images left open on a computer
The reaction to gloves left behind on a table
Inadvertent, yet thoughtless reminders
we’d like to forget, but are unable

It’s difficult to contain our emotions
from within the confines of fact
To not blurt out our instincts
at the expense of our tact
We burst selfishly out of a shell
that had previously been cracked
A sad excuse, and a symptom,
for a respect so sorely lacked
Yet…
We are ultimately accountable for our words
and the respect that they impact

A relationship is a work in progress

that always starts from behind
That’s why it’s far easier said than done
to be always thoughtful and kind
There is the inevitability of the past,
mixed with the today of the daily grind
The challenges of patience and personality
that can flood an open mind
Yet…
We need to keep floating our feelings
and be open to all we may find

You are still adjusting to a calendar of flux,
dotted with those difficult days
I still retract, detract, and then overreact
with the wrong turn of phrase
Some conflict will come, and conflict will go
as we share our common come what mays
Yet, in the reality of our commonalities
the mutual respect must go both ways

Never do I want be taken for granted,
or to be treated as an afterthought
You absolutely deserve only my best intention
and the best attention I’ve got
This give and take is a delicate balance
that often puts couples on the spot
Fortunately, we have this love on our side
It may not be everything, but it’s quite a lot
Yet…
We struggle sometimes, as we continue to make strides,
trying to give to one other as much as we’d like to get

We are trying our best, for all the best reasons,
Yet, we’re not all the way there,  just yet

“If a man constantly aspires is he not elevated.”

Henry David Thoreau

                       Aspire

The willingness to change your life
is all about your will

Deciding what makes you the happiest
and making it better still…

by ascending to the summit
of ambition’s highest hill.

Assuming control of who you really are

and doing what makes you whole.

Striving always to live your best life
by reaching for your loftiest goal…

by nurturing the impetus
inside your aspiring soul.

Inhabiting a life that makes you proud

and making the most of every day.

Attempting something you dare to do
by doing something you dare to say…

by using your elevated will
to find the ultimate way…

to live your life today.

You change, you thrive, you feel alive.

Enough

You take your time to tell a story
Suspending judgment in your certain way
The complete picture is in the details
I could listen to you talk all day.
I see your eyes as they dance to life
I watch your mouth as it curves a smile
My mind caresses that little scar
I listen intently all the while.

With only a few scant precious hours
A mid-week encounter to explore what’s next
Time challenges our sensory sensations
To capture moments not found in a text.
Our time is now until we meet again
With the grip of love a little stronger
I wrap this memory inside my arms
And I hold on to it a little longer.

It’s in the words that you say
and in the things that we do.
Always discovering a little more.
I can’t get enough of you.

Kindness rooted in this mutual respect
The truth can be found in our silent vow
Compassion engrained in how we live
We’ve made good decisions to arrive at now.
But so much more exists inside us
Coming to the surface whenever we kiss
Evident and real in the passion that prevails
From the meandering trail that has led to this.

Singular spirits with common goals
Always putting our children first
Consuming life while leaving space
For all of the adventure that we thirst.
Making the most of what we have
Cheers to us and to the people we are
To living with integrity and determined grit
The distance between us never too far.

Yet it is distant just the same
and puts limits on what we do
Always hoping for a little more.
I can’t get enough of you.

It’s the little things that make us tick
I soak them all in until we meet again
Until now aligns with place and time
And where and how just lead to when.
But mostly I notice you, and why I feel
The excitement and that parting ache
How much better it is to have you there
Lying right beside me when I wake.

Never enough hours for us to share
and mornings together are far too few
Always leaving me wanting more.
I can’t get enough of you.

SEEN

I try to see, in a perceptive light
A careful view, before hindsight…

I see it in you, and in what you sayEX TRAIL
Hope resonates with your every word
Entirely wrapped up, within it all
Yet, you are not entirely self-assured

Calm in manner, inside of herself
Marking her trail for a safe retrace
She never leaves if unprepared
A need to know, at a quickened pace

Life drives her when things get stale
Attention to detail on an awesome scale

An uphill climb, just setting out
To the first plateau with easy hope
Site unseen, on the downward side

Loose impediments, a slippery slope

Independence is her nature’s will,
with a new horizon over every hill

Slingshot branches, transparent webs
Broken limbs and exposed roots
Washed out paths, sideways jumps
Strategic moves to keep dry boots

A different challenge with every day,
taking careful steps along the way

A peaceful rest on level ground
trail3Settling beside the brush she clears
Hues of tranquility, natural surround
Her sighing breath, the last she hears

Despite scurried sounds of subtle fury,
she takes her while, there is no hurry

I see it in you, in that moment alone
With solitary sigh, you soak it all in
Just as soon, you get up and go
For you, that’s how it’s always been

I always want to see you hit your stride.
I will always be there, by your side.

I try to see, in a perceptive light
A careful view, beyond hindsight…

I see it in you, in your ups and downs
Energy measured by a metronome
Musical reminders are all around
A withdrawn place, that you call home

His every day has sharps and flats
IMG_20130617_111637Soothed alone, along sliding scales
Open notes, with pedals and picks
His hopes reverb, his guitar wails

Craftsman hands on razor strings
Sometime remains for loftier things

A shell outside his former self
Rhythm section, his toe tap feet
Strums alone, against this world
Internal bass, a heart-felt beat

Suspended existence, inside bare walls
as his spirits rise, and his body falls

Under an influence beyond his reach
Buys the ticket he should not afford
A melodic journey, away from it all
A familiar refrain, it strikes a chord

He collects his tools as he ingests facts,
and hones his craft with an altered axe

His visions of grandeur get him going
Seen ampBut out of sorts, he stops too soon
Amplified illusion, in double time
His insides sing, but they’re out of tune

The missing element that bonds great bands
Faltering instrument, it’s out of his hands

I see it in you, in that moment alone
With a solitary sigh, you soak it all in
Just as soon, your get up is gone
For you, that’s how it’s always been

I always want to see you at your best.
I am always here to discuss the rest.
