Keel

Keel

In spending time with you,
for all of these years
I’ve seen, that a little less,
can often mean more.

You say only so much.

But because of its substance…
Your two cents, to me,
are often worth four.

We spent a lot of time

this past weekend
Conversing, across from one another
From at least six feet away
Sharing our simple pleasures
Craft beer, food, and music
And catching up on our lives
For a good chunk of each day

Again, as always,

I am impressed by you
Your calming demeanor
Your quiet, certain style
Never too high
The correct amount of low
With all of our erst
And all of the while

I envy your approach to life
It seems far less rocky
Far less wrenching
Just a calmer way to live
Questions and listening
Observation and contemplation
As you take far more in
than you choose to give

Paying strict attention
in choosing what you say
Accentuating only the good
can never do you harm
You are keenly interested,
and intermittently curious
Your inquisitive nature,
is the key to your charm

There is something to be said
about consistency.
About the level.
An even keel.

The predictability

of never being unpredictable.
A flatter line
to everything you feel.

There are certain times

when there is little choice
One must wear their feelings
unabashedly, on their sleeve
I do have that soft spot
For all those people,
who openly express emotions
And that might even be me

Contently, and as always,

you just soak it all in
There’s a self-understanding
And a confidence you’ve got
Comfortable within your skin
Life surprises you less
You exhibit very little
Which tells me a lot

You’re safe and steady
You are willing, and able
Yet, purposely hesitant
to reveal your sincerity
Staying your course,
I see you as genuine
As if being uncomplicated
leaves you your clarity

I looked fondly forward
to having you here
Taking a necessary space
in my necessity bubble
A safe, familiar presence
Your easy contagious calm
Your sure settling influence
To spite the recent trouble

There is something to be said

about this certainty.
About the level.
Your even keel.

The reliability

of your someone reliable.
The friendship we keep.
And keeping it real.

After four long months,
of being socially distanced,
I was socially insistent
that you come to my door.

I am refreshed, and I thank you.

In these uncertain times…
Two days of our certainty
has meant so much more.

Solitary

Solitary
An enigma,
An illness,
A decision,
A hole.

Another question mark.
Another lost soul…

It’s hard to recognize someone
that no one knows
Difficult, to see,
what someone never shows
A lost face,
beneath a mask
A happier place,
inside a flask
A positive outlook,
an impossible task
So many questions,
you can’t find to ask

When a mind struggles, alone,
A brain storm, of their own
Swept up in in an instant
Where it’s dark and it’s distant
A solitary place,
they might go
Where every sky
must bring snow
Left with answers
that no one will know

It’s hard to comprehend something

that no one understands
Difficult, to grasp something,
when it’s out of your hands
A mystery,
wrapped up in a mind
A history
they drag behind
An act,
selfishly unkind
Too many reasons,
that are impossible to find

When a life ends, alone,

A sad choice, on their own
A final decision that’s made
When they are despondent or afraid
Solitary tears,
sliding down the drain
Cold and confounding,
like a January rain
Leaving little more,
than questions and pain

It’s hard to be sad

for someone who is gone
Difficult, now, for those
obliged to move on
An opened investigation
A closed case
A stark image,
they can’t replace
A terrible memory,
they can’t erase
A huge void,
with just a face

As I sit here, today, alone,

contemplating life, not just my own
I worry, about all that is to be,
What I may not understand, or see
The solitary angst,
my someones can’t bare
Changes in the seasons
When
there’s something in the air
The questions and answers,
we just have to share

I give my resolute vow…
I will be far more aware.
I will be here.
I will be there.

Scanning across your silent waters
Your beauty caresses my eyes
Every colour calmly reflected
Tall trees touching the skies
Crystal view of your possibilities
What an awakened mind sees
Contemplation and inspiration
Your enormity and your ease
Charleston Lake, reflective
I find myself in your mirror
Charleston Lake, you get me
I was meant to be here

Scanning the scope of your horizon
Contemplating your every layer
Exploring the complexity of your landscape
And picturing myself there
Creviced shapes and weathered faces
Sculptured images along your rocky shore
Tempting ledges and curious places
A short paddle to discover more
Charleston Lake, affected
Your essence draws me near
Charleston Lake, you’ve got me
I’ll see you every year

Looking out at the lake
Stretching my tired arms high
Shaking out the morning rust
Roused early and appreciating why

A view of your possibilities
What an awakened mind sees
Contemplation and inspiration
Your enormity and your ease

Compelling me to paint with words
Charming me with all you’ve got
A mind with renewed purpose
An expansive canvas to open thought

I am filled with the day

Charleston Lake, you got meIMG_20140925_115819[1]
Your essence holds me near
Charleston Lake affected
I was meant to be here

Glancing out on the lake
Your beauty caresses my eyes
Every colour calmly reflected
Tall trees touching the skies

Scanning the scope of your horizon
Contemplating your every layer
Exploring the complexity of your landscape
And picturing myself there

Creviced shapes and weathered faces
Sculptured images along a rocky shore
Tempting ledges and curious places
A short paddle to discover more

I am struck by your way

Charleston Lake, you got me
Your essence holds me near
Charleston Lake reflective
I find myself in your mirror

Charleston Lake, you get me
I’ll see you next year
