Applause

Applause

I’ve been here many times,
as their childhood has flown past

Sitting alone in the crowd
smiling, and having a blast
A proud, dedicated single parent
gathering memories that will last

She weaves her way through a defense

that had previously refused to yield
Deft footwork and bursts of speed
guide her down the field
I spring from the edge of my seat
as a late victory is sealed

My legs, energized by her exploit
My lungs, filled with a rush of air
An abrupt acknowledgment of her endeavor
as I quickly rise up from my chair
Emphatic words in a father’s approval
ecstatic to be right there

I see my teenage powerhouse
as she tumbles across the floor
A round-off and a back handspring
My gasp, and then a perfect two more
An exalted, frightening, wonderful feeling
that resonates to my core

My stomach, churning when she jumps
My heart, leaping when she lands
The uniquely exhilarating anguish
that any parent understands
Proud, as I put down the camera
to free up my hands

The impetus for my applause
Feats that constantly astound
No urge to look beside me
No need to look around
My two hands, together in the crowd
making their own sound

It seems to me that it’s a graceful gazelle
that suddenly emerges from the pack
Anticipating the exact moment
from my spot along the track
As she glides around the final curve
the others get further and further back

My mind, racing with her to the finish
My senses, tingling from the start
The extent of her accomplishments
matching the size of her heart
Knowing the work ethic and the effort
that always set her apart

Being early gets me a good seat
Dead center, given the chance
Oblivious of my surroundings
I listen to her play, I watch her dance
Happily lost, inside of myself
My own choice, my soul circumstance

My eyes, no matter what her stage
My ears, for any of the bands
The selfish, singular focus
that any parent understands
Proud, as I put the program down
to free up my hands

The inspiration for my applause
Daughters who constantly astound
No urge to look beside me
No need to look around
My t
wo hands, together in the crowd
making their own sound

Sitting alone, in the crowd

as each new season has passed
Thankful for each new memory
as time ticks by so fast
Never wondering, or worrying,
if this one will be the last

Incendiary

                    Incendiary
Resplendent under the night sky
20160509_201429

Her allure, all but inescapable
She summons, then she seduces
You’d resist, but you’re incapable

Helpless, you gravitate to her
Your attention compulsively drawn
Stoked, with sensory anticipation

Eyes cast, over the glistening lawn

The faint moon peers cautiously down
A vague thought in the distance
Her will, demanding your presence

Her passion, breathing insistence

As enticing as she is unpredictable
Her intensity, pushes you away
Her warmth, always pulls you back
Her intrigue, compels you to stay

Both incendiary and intoxicating
She has curious hypnotic powers
Getting lost in the possibilities
You could gaze at her for hours

You find nuances to her every hue
The lick of her playful flames
Dancing in different directions
Engaged in spirited games

Provide what she needs, she exhales
Nourished, she swells from inside
Ignore her, or leave her unattended
And her fervor will slowly subside

Reminded of her precarious nature
Her sudden sparks keep you leery
Yet, beside her, you find soothing comfort
And a warmth that makes you weary

An empty glass resting beside you
You bask, in the waning glow
As difficult as it is to get up
You both just seem to know

You rise, as the last of her falls
It is not the will that you lack
Recovering your balance, your focus
You take one hopeful look back

Spent, you find a flicker of life
Your pleasure, impossible to hide
The smell of the night on your body
You let the stars guide you inside

Autumn

leaves

Autumn

Leaves piled beneath a wind worn oak
An endless view from where I stand
My sigh, evident in the crispness of the day
The peculiar pleasure of rake in hand

The lingering urge to leap into the fray
Same fresh exuberance of when I was a boy
Knowing, that a hardy bowl of soup awaits
Reward, for doing what I secretly enjoy

More than enough work for my mind to wander
To ruminate, about this unique time of year
To soak in the scenery all around me
To gather my thoughts as night draws near.

A singular spirit that is uniquely autumn

Sights, and smells, that awaken the senses
Fields lined with every shade of the season
Yellows bursting through hillside fences

Glistening between the shadows
The eventual arrival of sun‘s first light
Rising graciously to greet the horizon
Colours that never seem so bright

Autumn 1

A harvest of many luminous hues
Of fiery orange and peach gold
The great art of our autumn
Blazing red in a scarlet bold

Musky bouquets that fill your nose
Arrows of geese in a unison of shrill
Maples, cloaked in a blanket of now
Sunny days that belie the chill

As October’s splendor slowly unfurls

The breeze provides what nature needs
While colours dance, and then embrace
And newness plants its yearly seeds

Trees, baring themselves to the elements
Leaves, drifting to the morning frost
Slowly dying, yet fragrant still
Paying their annual recurrent cost

With the sharp bite of November winds
A steady sway, and the boughs splinter
The crisp breath of autumn hastened
By the gasp of approaching winter

IMG_20141101_143311[1]

The snap of broken branches underfoot
Kindling, for an awaiting flame
Brisk nights, with the whiff of fire
Warm clothes that smell the same

The clarity of the evening sky
Then black and abrupt, as night falls
Stars aligned, on a moonlit canvas
An air of promise that darkness calls

Autumn sings with resounding refrain
Saying good-bye, with a flashy final show
A spectacular display of fall boldness
Before the barren white of silent snow

Todays leaves are bagged and set aside

The colours faint, under that same moon
The cold days of December approach
But tomorrow will echo today’s tune.

Magnetic

                                                                                                      magnetic

Magnetic

There is a prevailing appeal
when I follow my instincts
This sense of significance
when we are apart
A persuasive force
that brings us together
It is this fascination
that grips my heart

There is a powerful pull
when I reach for you
This sense of enticement
that draws me near
An energy between us
when we’re together
It is to this positive attraction
that we must adhere

There is a quality to time
when we’re together
This sense of purpose
 that says we should be
An assurance in knowing
that we fit together
It is this realization
that stays with me

There is a healthy impatience
when I am waiting
This sense of expectation
with no pretenses
An excitement in knowing
that we’ll be together
It is this anticipation
that awakens my senses

There is a heartfelt relief
when I hear the door
This sensation of warmth
when I find you there
A comfort in knowing
that we are here together
It is this appreciation
that we will always share

There is a strength in numbers
when we’re together
 This sense of resolve
when it’s you with me
An undeniable bond
that we hold together
It is this real connection
that will always be.

Enough

Calendar

Enough

You take your time to tell a story
Suspending judgment in your certain way
The complete picture is in the details
I could listen to you talk all day.
I see your eyes as they dance to life
I watch your mouth as it curves a smile
My mind caresses that little scar
I listen intently all the while.

With only a few scant precious hours
A mid-week encounter to explore what’s next
Time challenges our sensory sensations
To capture moments not found in a text.
Our time is now until we meet again
With the grip of love a little stronger
I wrap this memory inside my arms
And I hold on to it a little longer.

It’s in the words that you say
and in the things that we do.
Always discovering a little more.
I can’t get enough of you.

Kindness rooted in this mutual respect
The truth can be found in our silent vow
Compassion engrained in how we live
We’ve made good decisions to arrive at now.
But so much more exists inside us
Coming to the surface whenever we kiss
Evident and real in the passion that prevails
From the meandering trail that has led to this.

Singular spirits with common goals
Always putting our children first
Consuming life while leaving space
For all of the adventure that we thirst.
Making the most of what we have
Cheers to us and to the people we are
To living with integrity and determined grit
The distance between us never too far.

Yet it is distant just the same
and puts limits on what we do
Always hoping for a little more.
I can’t get enough of you.

It’s the little things that make us tick
I soak them all in until we meet again
Until now aligns with place and time
And where and how just lead to when.
But mostly I notice you, and why I feel
The excitement and that parting ache
How much better it is to have you there
Lying right beside me when I wake.

Never enough hours for us to share
and mornings together are far too few
Always leaving me wanting more.
I can’t get enough of you.

Clock

ONCE (inspired by the movie of the same title)

I was fully prepared to fight an old battle
To retreat to the scene of my haunting past
Return to the root of this open wound
To the hollow heart of the one I loved last.

Back to the city that ripped me down
Resolute and ready and wide awake
To prove that I am worthy to be with her
That her indiscretion was a huge mistake

Despite my anger I need to impress
Despite myself I wanted her again
Songs about loss and desolate nights
My blind memories of how it was then

I dream about only the good we had
In another time and in a different place
Yet my lyrics and I seem so alone
It’s how I remained until I saw your face
    And then you changed everything.

Something feels wrong in all of that
Your reassurance has shown me a light
I seek your substance to feel more alive
Our thoughts connect and it all feels right

I didn’t recognize the sensation at first
You seemed intrusive in your subtle way
You followed me home like a lost emotion
Then left me lonely when I asked you to stay

Something in the way that you see me
Naïve and curious and interested and aware
Soaking me in with a wide-eyed thirst
Filling my senses with the words we share

I found a generous family beside you
A humble and caring and warm place
With the sound of your voice next to mine
Strings and then keys in a selfless embrace
    And you changed everything.

An ease to your ways that soothed my soul
Inspiring my pen and my fingers and me
Quiet indulgence as familiar as friends
As if we had known it was not meant to be

Parallel lines, never to cross
I can’t react because I can’t understand
Despite my impulse to enter your world
Reality has returned and he has your hand

So it is time for us to move forward
Leave what we found with nothing to lose
I take a new strength found in our harmony
On to face circumstance and look for my muse

I left a piece of my life in your hands
You touched my notes in the perfect place
I tried oh so hard not to stare or to cry
As you sang my words with innocent grace
    And you changed everything.
