HEAR

HEAR

It’s about trust

Take me on my word.
Have I ever lied to you?

No lines for you
to read between.
I mean everything
that I say
I say everything
that I mean

It’s about space

It is okay to need solitude.
Can I not be alone with my thoughts?

No other way for me
to figure it out.
Sometimes, it is about
just me
And just me
that it’s all about

It’s about clarity

I know how I am feeling.
What reason would I have to lie?

No hidden agenda for you
to uncover.
I did love her,
back then
But then,
I didn’t love her

It’s about time

Every day adds to what has passed.
Why can’t you let it go too?

No reasons for you
to not move on.
Been gone for
so long
That it is
so long gone

It is about now

We have to trust in the big picture.
Put space between us and the past.

No words that I say
can make it more clear
Here and now is the
time for you
And now is the time
for you to hear

Weary

      Weary

 My left arm straight out
I wake up locked in place
right arm pinned under me
exasperation on my face.
Eyes-only glance to my left
3:17 on the clock
despite the untimely hour
I need to get up and walk.
A struggle to just get started
so familiar and frustrating
slowly turn onto my back
where another knot is waiting.
The motion too abrupt
I hear her wearily say
“is it still bothering you?
  I hope you are okay?”

The pain is now both of ours
awake in the dead of night
nothing seems to change
 will I ever feel alright?

Do I sit up or do I roll?

either way is a chore
which move tonight?
the best way to the floor?
Eventually I am standing
legs weary under the weight
I finally feel my body
it doesn’t feel great.
Sluggish, sore and irritated
I consume a gasp of air
regain some composure
as much as I can bear.
Knowing she’d like some water
I’m too spent to think
“I am getting some pills
can I get you a drink?”

The cat greets me with a look
as I flick on the kitchen light
as if to say “not again…
 will you ever be alright?”

Taking stock of my aches

I try to shake them out
wrist a pulsing whimper
shoulders a throbbing shout.
Stillness seems wiser
let my thoughts unwind
“concentrate elsewhere
relax and avert your mind.”
Leaning against the counter
I stare blankly at the floor
choke down two tablets
then swallow one more.
I need to get back to bed
the morning will be rough
the microwave says 3:39
  my body says “enough.”

Same tired routine
night after night after night
nothing seems to change
 will I ever feel alright?

Back to my drowsing beauty
dozing none too deep
her eyes loosely closed

hovering near sleep.
  “Are you feeling okay?”
raises her head, as I lie
“just the usual” I say
and we both know why.
Her hand touches my arm
“try to get some rest”
her calm voice soothing
puts her head on my chest.
For a moment I forget
the pain politely subsides
peace eventually arrives
and she’s the reason why.

Despite the same worries
and another rocky night
despite the constant pain
she makes me feel alright.

Foundation

                      Foundation

Wherever we choose to all be together wpid-img_20140510_120446.jpg
it will feel like home…

Where our paths inevitably intersect
at the heart of the lives we share
at the crux of our common ease
where vulnerability and support meet

Where we are always welcomed inside
with the embrace of certainty
with the warmth that is family
where we are able relax and revitalize

Where communication is encouraged
while we challenge day to day
while we experience life as one
where positivity and hopes reside

Where we can always find a friend
everyone is someone who understands
all hallways lead to a conversation
where we never have to feel alone

…The foundation for a remarkable life.

Wherever we can grow ever closer
that will be our home…

Where the morning awakens the senseswpid-img_20140510_115512.jpg
whiffs fill your nose as you lift your eyes
the sounds of doors opening one by one
where each day begins with each other

Where every room is the place to be
and family gatherings are any number
and a kitchen party precedes every meal
where memories are only a moment away

Where tangible inspirations reside
images that are etched in your mind’s eye
like the peaceful scatter of falling snow
where life is framed through a picture window

Where the doors always swing open
to a world of boundless adventure
to limitless unknown beyond fences
where anything can seem like a possibility

Where we can build more memories
ones that will be uniquely ours
ones that chronicle lives well spent
where the walls will tell our story

…The foundation for a remarkable life wpid-img_20140510_120056.jpg

When life leads us on many journeys
love will bring us home.

Difficult

There

Difficult

Seeing a family struggle to understand
How sudden and final life can be
When a moment ago all seemed right
Makes how you react so very key

It’s always difficult at a time like this
To find just the right words to say
You know it’s not I, and it’s never me
It needs to be you, or he, or they

Offer of yourself, and be available with
A knowing glance, a shoulder, an ear
And it isn’t wrong to share a laugh
You know he would if he were here

Be who you are and think about him
And the reasons why you feel so bad
You’ll remember it’s because of who he was
And all of the great times you had

Absorb the emotions with all of these friends
And true perspective will take its hold
Listen, and share, and you will realize
The lost can be found in the stories told

You have many memories to hold on to
Lasting impressions of how they were made
So very evident as you look around
In the resilient smiles that can only fade

…Always difficult at a time like this
To find the words you struggle to say

Faith

Faith Books
FAITH

I watch intently as the representative speaks
Certain, as he, that he lives by every word
I look around to find the faces of that same belief
It’s the story that binds them in what they’ve heard

We are here to celebrate in the eyes of their maker
We are here to join two good people as man and wife
To put a righteous stamp on their first page together
To share guidance and guidelines for the rest of their life

We are here to say good-bye to the dearly departed
The volunteer, the neighbour, the follower, the friend
So easy to find solace and comfort in their collective loss
After they hear of the peace she had found near the end

I smile for those who have found their own way
And I feel for the ones who think they must follow
I worry for the those neither here nor there
And I fear for the ones with a faith so hollow

Faith comes from the truth and the need to know
We don’t require a symbol for who we should be
Draw upon the best you see in yourself and others
Have faith in your choice, and choose to believe

The words one subscribes to can define who we are
The righteous indignation that is found in a book
We should choose to learn more about good than evil
Search for more of the positive, wherever we look

Why can’t believers follow the peace they entrust
Why can’t those people use their passive voice
No where does it say that faith and war should collide
It isn’t so written in their document of choice

I smile for those who have found their way
And I feel for the ones who think they are lost
I worry for the those neither here nor there
And I fear for the ones whose faith has a cost

I find my inner peace on level ground
A foundation of family that helps me to cope
Inherent building blocks of a lifetime so far
A life that I balance with  faith and hope

Never have I ever considered drastic measures
Even through the depths of my lowest of lows
Seasons change and people pass by like a breeze
Our lives are cyclical and that’s just how it goes

Whenever I ask myself Why me? or Why them?
When life brings me down and when times are tough
I can find my own faith in those whom I love
In family and friends, I find faith enough

I smile with those who have found the way
And I feel for those who still don’t know
I worry for the those neither here nor there
And I fear for the ones too stubborn to grow

My faith comes from the truth and my need to know
I don’t require a symbol for who I should be
I draw upon the best I see in myself and others
I have faith in my choice, and I believe in me

Michael

                  Michael

Oh red-skied morning
calm before the storm.
A sailor man so gentle
with smiling eyes so warm.Ocean2
The tides of life drift away,
as that lonesome breeze blows,
the loving soul of Michael
to the sea where it flows.

Young enough to wonder why
In dreams alone, never deep
Old enough for the grips of what

That echo inside a silent sleep

Submerged inside a growing mind
Unable to fathom loss, or to let him go
Unwilling to accept a new reality
Unable to embrace an empty shadow

The sailor man and his river
flow from shore to unfamiliar shore.
While understanding lays dormant
alone, on a bottomless ocean floor.
And the tides of life drift away
as that lonesome breeze blows
the loving soul of Michael
to the sea where it goes.NY Ship

Sunshine on mindful waters
reflect an ever-longing light
in the ever fateful flickering
of painful wrong and right

Though easier now to understand,
you were gone far too soon for me
The love of life, however, is forever there
in the image that I will always see

Oh red-skied morning,
calm before the storm.
Always there if we need you,
memories of safe and warm.
The tides of life drift away
to a port that no one knows.
The soul of our good man Michael
rides out to the sea where it flows.

Carrying me high above it all,Ocean
strong arms to hold me there…

until the water reaches land
and I can touch his gentle hand.

His kindness and spirit are not gone
because waves move on and on.

Perspective

Perspective
Misunderstanding.

Misunderstood.
Anyway that you put it,
It is never any good.

Always seems to begin as a whisper
Accelerates on one side alone

A single word taken the wrong way
Actual intentions, largely unknown.

The kind of careless reaction
That can take all of it away
A thoughtless mental mistake
After a very thoughtful day.

You are wrong.
No. You are.

Any way that you put it,
It should never get this far.

Anger runs away with the truth
Leaving confusion in its wake
First and last straw all at once
A different mind-set, another take.

A tenuous and delicate balance
On a paper-thin perch
An instant away from nothing
After a life-long search.

I am sorry.

I was wrong.
Be the one to say it,
When it’s gone on too long.

Don’t let your ego get the best of you
And jeopardize all that you’ve built
Clearly not worth the risk

Neither the ultimatum, nor the guilt.

You realize your overreaction
You recognize your own short sight
Feeling tired and wired and restless
After a late love torn night.

Think of all you have to lose.

Lose the drama to save face.
Take the high road to resolution.
 Let perspective find its place.

Patience

               Patience
Life is a test of endurance.

It’s a journey, not a race.
The heart needs to realize
at a slow and steady pace.

Take one big step forward
Then a pause to reflect
It’s all a matter of time
and of space, and of respect.

Always tempting to jump ahead
To take that leap of faith
To embrace a familiar feeling
of comfort, warm and safe.

Wiser to observe caution
Be sure that you can cope
Better to know the distance
than to spring across with hope.

Life is a test of endurance.
It’s a journey, not a race.
The mind needs to realize
at a slow and steady pace.

Teetering on the edge of a fall
The soul’s struggle deep
A cavern of internal unknown
that wakes us as we sleep.

There is a delicate balance
In how to act and what to say
Wire thin the element of risk
that the one, could get away.

It’s true that patience is a virtue
The strongest will’s test
An ever necessary struggle
with knowing what is best.

Life is a test of endurance
It’s a journey, not a race
The spirit needs to stabilize
at a slow and steady pace.

The answer may be simple
It’s the question that is obscure
A puzzle with many pieces
If they’ll fit is what’s unsure.

The solution becomes easier
As we discover all of the parts
Take the time to get it right
and we’ll stimulate our hearts.

Patiently putting it all together
Is completing how we feel
Joined as one in body and mind
in a picture of something real.

Life is a test of endurance.
It’s a journey, not a race.
Two hearts need to coincide
at a slow and steady pace.

Enough

Calendar

Enough

You take your time to tell a story
Suspending judgment in your certain way
The complete picture is in the details
I could listen to you talk all day.
I see your eyes as they dance to life
I watch your mouth as it curves a smile
My mind caresses that little scar
I listen intently all the while.

With only a few scant precious hours
A mid-week encounter to explore what’s next
Time challenges our sensory sensations
To capture moments not found in a text.
Our time is now until we meet again
With the grip of love a little stronger
I wrap this memory inside my arms
And I hold on to it a little longer.

It’s in the words that you say
and in the things that we do.
Always discovering a little more.
I can’t get enough of you.

Kindness rooted in this mutual respect
The truth can be found in our silent vow
Compassion engrained in how we live
We’ve made good decisions to arrive at now.
But so much more exists inside us
Coming to the surface whenever we kiss
Evident and real in the passion that prevails
From the meandering trail that has led to this.

Singular spirits with common goals
Always putting our children first
Consuming life while leaving space
For all of the adventure that we thirst.
Making the most of what we have
Cheers to us and to the people we are
To living with integrity and determined grit
The distance between us never too far.

Yet it is distant just the same
and puts limits on what we do
Always hoping for a little more.
I can’t get enough of you.

It’s the little things that make us tick
I soak them all in until we meet again
Until now aligns with place and time
And where and how just lead to when.
But mostly I notice you, and why I feel
The excitement and that parting ache
How much better it is to have you there
Lying right beside me when I wake.

Never enough hours for us to share
and mornings together are far too few
Always leaving me wanting more.
I can’t get enough of you.
