Drained

Drained

Life asked too much of me today…

When I finally did sit down,
in silent exhaustion
the whole of me was aching,
inside and out
My determination had been battered
And my will was strewn about
The voice of all of my frustrations
left
too tired to shout

I had been drained by the day,
feeling tattered and torn
This day, took everything I had
And then greedily wanted more
My heart, left clinging to my sleeve
My soul, scattered on the floor

Endless hours, of one after another,
constantly knocking on my door

Yet, there was a calming sense of relief
A satisfaction of accomplishment
For having passed each test,
on the worst ‘just one of those days’
I rose up to every harsh challenge
I chose
all of the appropriate plays
I was exhausted, yet extremely alive,
proud of my self-sustaining ways

Life asked too much of me today…

Summoning everything that I had,
I found more than I knew I had to give
On days like these, we don’t get to choose
the life that we have to live

Triathlon

 Triathlon
I am not completely sure
if I am entitled to be,
or, really, if I’m even allowed
But, I am thoroughly impressed by you
And, dare I say,
I am extremely proud…

I watched you, in your controlled haste,
steadying, readying, and taking your place at the start
And then I noticed the cool and calm ease
with which you settled into the race
Then, somehow, you found the presence of mind
to look up, to find me, and even to wave
Before swimming, strong and steadily away,
from the huge smile you left on my face

20180819_091535

It seems that I’d completely underestimated
the strength and power of your stroke

as I arrived, too late to support you,
through your swim to bike transition
My own personal pride thoroughly jolted
by the sick emptiness in my stomach

My eagerness to video, thwarted,
by your speed, and your top five position

Yet, my whole heart went out there with you
as you spun your way through the winding course
I went up the hills with you, and then down,
my mind, racing along, despite what I couldn’t see
It was impossible for me to relax, or even to sit,
with all of the unknown, and all the anticipation
So I paced, anxiously, awaiting your arrival
as you pedaled your way back to me

20180819_094238

A contented relief flushed over me
as you braked, and then you touched ground
As you pushed your bicycle to your chosen spot,
I felt as much like your fan, as I was your friend
Despite my pent up angst, and energetic love,
I knew I had a very small window to speak
Time enough to cheer you, and to reassure you,
and to tell you, that I’d find you near the end

As you switched your shoes, and turned to go
I noticed the game-face return to your glance
I’ve seen that will and determination before
It’s who you are, and in much that you do
As you ran out of sight, on your last leg,
I yelled more encouragement, in due haste
Wishing that my words could push you along
Hoping my spirit would run with you

As you emerged from the tunnel, weary legged,
nearing the last of your well of endurance,
your eyes seemed focused, intently on the task
Looking for anything that you had left inside
While you bravely ascended the final climb,
you amazingly found one final burst,
crossing the finish, alone with your fatigue
Soon to be joined by my burgeoning pride

20180902_102600

I stayed back, for a minute or two, purposely,
to simply observe, and to give you some space
And as I watched you, catching up to your breath,
I saw right then, what separates you from the crowd
It’s your personal investment, in all that you attempt
In my eyes, you’re resplendent, with all that you are
And in that moment, as you looked especially beautiful,
I could not have been more impressed or proud

Retreat

“Is it contact or just reaction?
…Is it living, or just existence?
It takes a little more persistence
To get up and go the distance

— Neil Peart – Something For Nothing

Retreat

I contended
while you pretended
Yet, it was I
who had to choose…

Hearts choose
Egos bruise
Stubborn minds
light the fuse
A battle of wills

that I would win,
and lose

I retreated

while you depleted
Yet, it was I
who still brought flowers…

Broken flowers
Passionate showers
The uncertainty
filled my hours
Ups and downs
losing their steam,
their odd powers

I rejected
while you reflected
Yet, it was I
who felt the pain…

Too much pain
Nothing to gain
Constant inconsistency
driving me insane
The truck pulled up
to load my life,
once again.

“I’ve been burdened with blame,
trapped in the past for too long,

I’m moving on”

— Rascal Flatts —

Kick

Kick
Striding toward your goals
Always the first to arrive
Always the last to leave
Always giving your best…
Going the extra yard
to separate from the rest

Staying with the group,
you are comfortable where you are.
With no urgency to take the lead,

you settle into fourth instead.
Prepared, mentally and physically,
for your chance to move ahead.
Sensing it in the pace,

you anticipate the moment.
  Your instincts tell you when,
and they always seem to know.
I can just barely get the words out,
“Here she comes. Watch her go.”

Kick
Seizing the moment,
and having what it will take
Kick
Seeing the opportunity,
and leaving the rest in your wake
Kick
The training
The discipline
One last rep
One more lap
Kick
Knowing you have enough
to close the gap

Prepared for your success
Hours in the weight room
Hours in the gym
Hours on the track…
Building up the resolve,
to separate from the pack

Striving for your most

Your work ethic
Your ambition
Your fight…
An inward strength that emerges,
with all of its might

With a glance to your right,
you make your move to the outside.
  There is one remaining curve,
and you have one remaining burst.
   Six or seven powerful strides
take you from fourth to first.
You accelerate through the finish
and you glide to a stop.
Hands on your hips,
you are tired and content.
Satisfied with your preparation,
and the rush of how it went.

Kick
Brash and self-certain
Confident, bordering on bold
Kick
I’ve seen it many times
and it never gets old
Kick
The speed
The stamina
One last push
One more gear
Kick
All of the grit and guts
that got you here

You leave it all out there
Your determination
Your heart
Your will…
Just when it all seems spent,
you get stronger still

Precarious

Precarious
Every morning I see him
barely hanging on
Dangling, precariously
under a lingering moon

Managing to endure
despite his battered shell
A razor piece of skin
holding him up high

Been torturous months
since that horrendous storm
Shattered his foundation
destroying his lofty view

Many extreme days since
of ice and punishing wind
Chipping away his perseverance
diminishing his resolve

I imagine his motivation
the reason for his strength
The last strand of resilience
that holds him there

The harsh and bitter elements
cracking through his will
Leaving him alone, wavering
on the brink of his demise

20160221_094612[1].png

I check on him again
battered by days end
Still hanging on, barely,
by that same thread of hope

Any quick jab of pride
is quickly superseded
Replaced by the reality
of what lies ahead

Knowing that rest is fleeting
as night brings the unknown
One thin strand of determination
preserving his weary soul

Nights of wavering doubts
of cold and cruel struggle
Exhausting his perseverance
diminishing his resolve

I imagine his thoughts
through this arduous battle
Through the repetitive rigours
of winter’s constant extremes

Recognizing his own inevitability
his slight, precarious being
Perhaps, hoping not to fall
until the warm ground of spring

5,000

During World War II, starting in the winter of 1940-41, in and around the village of Le Chambon-sur-Lignon in Nazi-occupied France, 5,000 Jews were sheltered…by 5,000 Christians.

The Protestant Huguenot villagers, mostly poverty-stricken themselves, protected the Jews at the risk of their own lives. Every home took in Jews, fed and protected them, right under the noses of the Gestapo. They were often hidden in the countryside when the authorities came to investigate. For four years they defied the Nazi régime and a French government that was collaborating with the Nazis. The citizens of Le Chambon sheltered these strangers, educated their children, and arranged for hundreds to flee to Switzerland or Spain via an intricate, wooded, underground escape route.

True to their beliefs, some citizens of Le Chambon-sur-Lignon penned a letter to the Nazi-influenced Vichy government, feeling spiritually obligated to admit that they were indeed sheltering Jewish refugees. They were clearly defiant in their determination to protect them – “We feel obliged to tell you that there are among us a certain number of Jews…whose only fault is to be born in another religion…We have Jews. You’re not getting them.”

No resident of Le Chambon, it is believed, ever turned away or betrayed a single Jewish refugee.

“I do not know what a Jew is.  I know only human beings.”
André Trocmé, the Huguenot pastor of Le Chambon

They were welcomed

  Given shelter and refuge
  Without hesitation.
O
n the edge of violence.

Protected, without question
  Given food and a future
  At the risk of everything
I

One life saved, f
or every hero.
From a man.
From a horrific plan.
From a power, aimed for zero.

Five thousand.
Spared a hateful demise.
Five thousand.
Strong and assured.
Five thousand.
Sharing one single purpose.
Five thousand.
And no one said a word.

Hiding strangers

Sharing what little they had
 Without hesitation
For a number of years.

A beacon of hope
  Sharing an indomitable spirit
  Without reservation
A
nd despite their fears.

One life saved, for every hero.
From a man.
From a horrific plan.
From a power, aimed for zero.

Five thousand.
Hidden amongst them.
Five thousand.
Their c
onviction, silently heard.
Five thousand.
Sharing one selfless will.
Five thousand.
And no one said a word.

An immaculate deception, in the face of the enemy.

To do what was right.
For the preservation of life.
Committed, as one, to one humanity.

Happy are those hungry and thirsty of justice…for they will be satisfied.”

Wait

“Waiting makes wine better; but waiting makes man decay ”
                                                                            (
Mehmet Murat Ildan)

                               Wait

Circumstance beyond our control
Having done more than our partIMG_20141017_152545
Biding our time in compromise
While life waits for us to start

The pace of things has slowed
Life crawls along these days
Like a clock without a minute hand
An ocean with no waves
Like a recluse with amnesia
One lane, that goes both ways

Life is waiting for us to make our move
Suspended in a state of just because
Like a transitory holding pattern
Biding our time, in persistent pause

It seems less about the living

When we do nothing but wait
Slowed up by stubborn time
Stuck behind a broken gate

Plans we’ve made have stalled
The situation has put our lives on holdIMG_20141017_152754
Like a computer needing to reboot
An engine that is too cold
Like a chess player without a move
A story, that yearns to be told

Life is waiting for us to get on with it
Caught in the clutches of just because
Like a promise with blurred hope
Biding our time, in a hazy fuzz

A story we’ll have, about our endurance

A lesson of patience wearing thin
As time stretches out endlessly
Waiting for the next chapter to begin

Carrying restlessness around
The burden of a life yet to know
Like a suit case full of sand
A tree laden with snow
Like a poet with a heavy heart
A moving truck, with nowhere to go

Life coerces us to bear this load
Disregard the weight of just because
Like expectations that are worth the wait
We will bide our time, because life doesIMG_20141017_174041

The willingness to change your life
is all about your will.

Expanding your horizons creates space for the new

Enhance your life with challenges and new experiences

To grow is to improve, and to improve is to change

Fulfillment is all the motivation that you need

Deciding what makes you the happiest
and making it better still…

Determine what you want from life and live accordingly

by ascending to the summit
of ambition’s highest hill.

Assuming control of who you really are

and doing what makes you whole.

You should be the change that you seek

Cultivate the courage to take chances

Keep moving ahead because life does not look back

Striving always to live your best life
by reaching for your loftiest goal…

Keep your ambition close to your heart

by nurturing the impetus
inside your aspiring soul.

Inhabiting a life that makes you proud

and making the most of every day.

Don’t just devote your time, invest in it

It is never too late to be who you want to be

Attempting something you dare to do
by doing something you dare to say…

You change, you thrive, you feel alive

by using your elevated will
to find the ultimate way…

to live your life today.

Try

Try

Sometimes life can bring you down
and painful realities can leave a scar
Do not let anything take the best of you
and never walk away from who you are

Every day is a battle when we let it be
memories will stay and moments pass by
But every one of us has reasons to live
and every person has the will to try.

This world is incredible and challenging and fun
and the best of your dreams could come true
Yet you run the risk of missing out
if you don’t start by believing in you

Try to always live your best life
Seize opportunity and you will realize why
Try to be the person who makes you happy
and always try to at least try.

Capture the realization…

I know you have had your struggles
and felt the affects of a life-altering fall
You will find the determination to reascend
and gather the balance to stand up tall

Reach out and capture that realization
smile with pride when you make it through
You will get past all of the ups and downs
and will remember what I know to be true

I see the strength you carry inside
and I see the fight in your eyes
I have felt the fire of your ambition
I see the determination, the will, the tries.

You have helped me to battle also
for every feeling and every sensation
Helped me to see the big picture
and to capture this realization…

I realize that nothing is forever
and life can race by so fast
Each and every moment that passes
is one that I can’t get back

Searching within the recesses of me
I find that place where ambition lurks
Emerging out of a well of reservation
I discover how great that trying works

Every minute lost without an effort
is sixty more seconds out of the sun
Every hour I spend in the clouds
is sixty more minutes of potential fun

Taking each chance and every adventure
I will run with them until I am spent
Then reflect upon the entire experience
and bask in the glow of how well it went

Try to always live my best life
Seize the opportunities and challenge why
Try to be a person who keeps on realizing
and always try to at least try.
