Ahead

Ahead

Looking only forward
To today
To every day
Without the ache
Without the affliction
With nothing in my way

I wake up now,
pain-free
No more agony
accompanying me
No more hesitation,
as I stand
I feel the fortitude
take my hand

With my chin up
and eyes straight ahead
I look past the pain,
that I used to dread

Looking only forward

at work
at play
With no distress
With no distraction
With nothing in my way

I face my tasks
head on
Finish the game,
soreness gone
More prepared,
increasingly strong
I feel a resilience
that pulls me along

With my hands steady
and my feet firm
I am fully prepared
for the long-term

Looking only forward

in all I do
in all I say
With no adversity
With no apprehension
With nothing in my way

I can make plans
worry free
None of the severity
hindering me
Completely focused
on come what may
I feel my optimism
leading the way

With my mind clear
and ambition alive
I am ahead of myself
when I arrive

Awakening

Awakening
IMG_20150506_210512[1]
Perpetually incapable
of sleeping in
Yet entirely content
for the day to begin
My muse and I
Both wide awake
With tea, with coffee
With the sound of the lake

Off to her work
Me, to my pen
Equal parts solitude
and together again
Alone with my thoughts
Joined by my ease
A limitless view
The sound of the breeze

Between work and living
The grind or the gain
Managing my potential
Lessening my pain
Relief from the scalpel
A new home on the bay
Endless possibilities
A brand new day

 IMG_20150506_203937[1]

Impending deadlines
Urgency that can wait
Time, of the essence
Tomorrow, too late
Adrenalin fed future
My opportunity knocks
Like a rush of creativity
Like the waves on the rocks

Changes are in order
Where and how I live
Untapped opportunity
All that I can give
Expecting my best
 Wanting even more
Reaching for happiness
 The waves to the shore

Between work and living
Less pressure, less pain
More of these moments
 Everything to gain
Endless possibilities
I am wide awake
A much better man
A new life on the lake

Commute

Commute

Car acoustics
take me away
The soundtrack
to another day
Open road
An open mind
Work in front of me
then left behind

IMG_20150329_105151[1]

To and from
The same routine
So I prepare myself
for the time between
Beyond the stop lights
I begin my day
New music loaded
and I press play

This familiar highway
Sets the scene

For rhythmic places
I’ve never been
Alone with an artist
I’ve just met
Reality
on the horizon
but not yet

IMG_20150329_104347[1]

 Car stereo
An hour each way
The soundtrack
The tone of my day
Mental preparation
for come what may
A mindful escape
Just press play

IMG_20150329_091127[1]

Commute enhanced
by drums and guitar
Outside of myself
inside of my car
On my own
with whomever I choose
Lost in the lyrics
I never lose

 Delving into the unknown
alters my view
The same drive
yet something new
Enraptured escape
in tunes sublime
Nothing in front of me
except the time

IMG_20150329_090743[1]

Car stereo
The cerebral way
The soundtrack

The refrain of my day
To different places
I can get away
I strap myself in

and I hit play

Local

Local

There is something missing in suburbia…

A city has them, scattered all around
A buzz of activity in any small town
It’s where the locals can often be found.
A distinct identity for most of these places
Where’s there’s no shortage of friendly faces.
A wheel of houses, with a familiar hub
I
t’s commonly known as your local pub.

There should be one in every neighbourhood…

A place to meet, after the daily grind
A place to relax, laugh and unwind
In Canada, however, we are woefully behind.
They’ve been doing it in Europe for years
Relaxing after work, with friends and beers.
Like a charter member, of the best club
You are a loyal patron of your local pub.

An avenue for embracing subdivided life…

A perfect chance for neighbours to meet and talk
Taking advantage of the hour on the clock

A simple stroll, to the very next block.
Have a kitchen with food, and include a menu
So the kids can come and enjoy it with you.
Just sit right down, order up some grub
They’re cooking for you at your local pub.

A convenient way to enhance your day…

Decrease the list of “friends you seldom see”
A helpful boost to your local economy
Everyone knows
that it’s the ‘place to be’.
No need to worry about driving your car
A fact that eliminates many a bar.
No need for transit, or a taxi stub
It’s walking distance to your local pub.

It seems pretty basic when you add it all up…

Neighbours getting together in one place. +

An escape from the day-to-day of the daily race. +
A friendly smile on every familiar face. +
Families gathering to meet and greet. +
Saving on gas, because you use your feet. +
Having said all of that, herein lies the rub
= My subdivision,
and I, need a local pub.

Toll

East gate here we go again[1]                                 Toll

Underemployed and underwhelmed
making a buck the hard way
at the expense of my integrity
another dollar, another day

Paying a steep price to just get by
aching body and weary soul
mortgaging my self-respect
while it takes its daily toll

East Gate
here we go again
thinking about getting out
as I walk in

Uneasy and unfulfilled
valuable time is wasting away
small return on substantial investment
just another dollar, just another day

No real long-term interest
keeping pace with the cost of living
repeatedly taxing my every nerve
all taking and no giving

East Gate
here we go again
already exhausted
as I walk in

Unrewarding and unrelenting
a payroll number with no say
no incentive to add value
same old dollar, same old day

Waging my own personal battle
time is money, tick toc
physically and mentally spent
literally wanting to punch the clock

East Gate
here we go again
thinking about leaving
as I walk in

Uncertain but undeterred
there has to be a better way
without this risk there is no reward
one more dollar, one more day

It’s time to save for my future
to find myself, before I get lost
this life has so much more to offer
getting out… is worth the cost

East Gate…
never again.
