Until

Until
I squeeze her hand, firmly,
because I know
Separation, and waiting,
in the where, and the when
Tomorrow’s uncertainty
is inevitable change
The vague distance
From now until then

It feels like a test
with no set answers
A personal goal
you occasionally meet
A leap of faith,
across a void
Wishful thinking
You land on your feet

Vicarious living
In the here and the gone
Shutting it off…
Until it’s on

I rub her arm, gently,
because I understand
Angst, and lethargy,
in the loss, and the sorrow
It soothes her, a little,
but is little more
Dulling the pain
Until the next tomorrow

The empty of a room
with clean sheets
A vacant familiarity,
you easily recall
The faintest echo
of personal space
Awaiting a guest
Anyone at all

Vicarious living
Leaving all you’ve got
Missing them, for now…
Until your not

She kisses my cheek, softly,
because I am here
In this unknown, together,
as far as we know
In the strange todays
of an empty nest
For the time that flies
And where it may go

We’ve been here before
with a similar view
This same experience,
stark and real
The shared sensation
you don’t want
A common bond
You both feel

Vicarious living
The calendar yearns
Time, fleeting…
Until it returns
